According to the Commercial Appeal, Katie Powell has died.
Powell is the mother who drove her 36-year-old son to an address in North Memphis, where he assaulted his ex-wife. Powell was shot in the head as she tried to drive her son away from the scene.
The man who shot her has been charged with second-degree murder.
An excerpt:Maurice Jack, 32, is accused of firing the shot that killed Powell after a confrontation between her son, Kevin Powell, 36, and Kevin Powell's ex-wife.
Now, why isn't this a castle doctrine case? Did Jack live at the Oakwood home?
Kevin Powell has been charged with with aggravated burglary and domestic assault in that case. Jack is charged with second-degree murder, using a firearm to commit a felony and two counts of aggravated assault.
According to a police affidavit, Katie Powell drove her son to a house in the 1600 block of Oakwood in North Memphis, where he allegedly assaulted his ex-wife before attempting to get away in the van driven by his mother.
Jack, who had been inside the home, fired one shot through a rear window of the van as Katie Powell drove away, striking her in the head, police said.
In any event, is this a homicide or what?

I wonder if she drove him there willingly. I find it hard to believe a 69-year-old woman would willingly be driving anyone around at 4 a.m., much less her hot-headed son intent on violence.
I'd charge the son with murder in the commission of a felony.
