UPDATE (7/17): Memphis police have arrested a suspect in the murder of Dee Henderson--and it's the man who found him, his grandson, 30-year-old Cortez Thomas.
Figures.
An excerpt from the release:
Homicide Investigators have charged 30-year old Cortez Thomas in connection to the death of Dee Henderson on July 16.Damn.
Thomas, the live-in grandson of Mr. Henderson, was charged with First Degree Murder.
On Wednesday around 9:30 am, Officers responded to a wounding call at 1040 Fields where the 72-year old victim was found unresponsive in the backyard of the house.
Thomas was developed as a suspect after he gave conflicting statements surrounding his whereabouts at the time of the homicide.
The investigation revealed while Henderson was working in the backyard, Thomas retrieved a firearm and shot his grandfather.
The Shelby County Medical Examiner ruled Henderson's death as a homicide from a gunshot wound to the back.

ORIGINAL POST (7/16): According to the Commercial Appeal, WEVL program director Brian Craig confirmed that the elderly man found dead in his backyard today is Dee "Cap'n Pete" Henderson, longtime volunteer DJ and host of "Cap'n Pete's Blues Cruise."
Henderson was 74.
His body was discovered by his grandson.
Police suspect foul play but the cause of death has not yet been determined.
In any event, Memphis has lost a legend. Let's just hope that the suspect is heat. (I know, it isn't but still...)
Godspeed, Cap'n.
